The alternative modern battery technology to Lithium Polymer for R/C Lithium are Ion Phosphate . We have the high performance M1 cells made by A123 Systems the US company and also the lower cost alternative which are good for applications where the high charge/discharge of the A123 is not needed.

The capacity to weight ratio is about the same in the above cells. The cells are about 35% heavier that Lithium Polymer as and you need to up the prop size of cell count to compensate for the difference in lipo/lifePo4 specifications.
On the plus side you get a safer and a longer life pack, which is not as frail as, Lithium packs. For those of you still out there using Nimh packs, consider these as a replacement.
